Research Paper on Dr. Seuss free essay sample

These famous words not only started my childhood but many children’s childhood. Theodore Seuss Geisel or most commonly known as Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1994 and from there the world was changed. Theodore Geisel is a charismatic man who put his lively personality into his fun and lighthearted books like Green Eggs and Ham, The classic Cat in the Hat, and the iconic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Born on March 2,1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts Theodore Seuss Geisel made his way into the world. His mother Henrietta and Theodore were very busy people. His father managed the family brewery and later supervised Springfield’s public park system after the brewery closed because of prohibition. â€Å"His mother was a baker who often chanted the names of the pies she was making at the bakery in a soft lively rhythm to the children as they fell asleep at night. † (Kallen 8). Geisel grew up speaking German and English, and his fascination quirky words began at an early age due to his family. Some books that inspired Dr. Seuss were The Whole Book for writing and The Brownies: Their Book for drawing. â€Å" Theodore Geisel, was an American author, artist, and publisher who wrote more then forty books for children. † (Kallen 8). Some of these books include: Hop On Pop, The Cat In The Hat, Horton Hears A Who, The Lorax, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Oh, The Places You’ll Go, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Sneetches, Fox In Sox, Yertle the Turtle, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, and If I Ran the Zoo. Three iconic works of Dr. Seuss are Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Green Eggs and Ham is a very popular childhood favorite. In this short tale Dr. Seuss depicts two very opposite characters. Sam is the persistent â€Å"child† in the tale who tries to get the older much grumpier elder in this story to eat green eggs and ham. As the story moves along Sam out the elder in different situations to see if he would eat the green eggs and ham, but to Sam’s dismay the elder wouldn’t. Finally after trying and trying and trying Sam gets the elder to try the Green eggs and ham. One of the most popular stories by Dr. Seuss is the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This story became so popular that Universal Studios not only picket it up for a movie, but also a whole theme for their Christmas season theme park. In this story the Grinch loathes Christmas and the who’s with every fiber of his being. The Grinch presents himself as socially cut off from the who’s down in whoville. He lives on top of Mt. Crumpit with his dog Max. All of this hate is because his heart is two sizes too small (and this time he’ll keep it off). He finally had enough of the Who’s bangboozaling and clangclangaling so he devised a plan to steal Christmas. After Santa Clause came and delivered all the presents to the houses he would sneak in, in his Santa Clause suit and steal every present, every light, every decoration, every tree, and all of the food for the feast. He even stole the roast beast! He would empty the houses one by one and he didn’t leave anything. Not even a crumb big enough for a mouse. So as he got done with emptying the houses and was about to dump everything over Crumpit he heard a noise, a weird noise not of sorrow but of singing. That day his heart grew 10 times bigger. So in the end the Grinch that stole Christmas ended up being the Grinch that saved Christmas, he even served the roast beast and the feast! The next story that is pretty popular and also got picked up for a movie is The Cat in the Hat. In this silly story Dr. Seuss tells a tale about a control freak sister, Sally and a rule-breaking brother, Conrad. Conrad not only doesn’t follow the rules but if you tell him to do something he always does the opposite of what any authority figure tells him to do. On the other hand his sister sally always foes what she is told and never really has any fun, she sucks the fun out of everything. On this rainy day the kids don’t know what to do. Then a miracle happens! The magical cat in the hat comes to visit comes to provide all the fun they can have with no consequences. As the day goes on and the mess gets bigger the cat in the hat introduces Thing 1 and Thing 2 from his world to Sally and Conrad. They came from this bow that lead to the cats universe, of course the cat knowing the Conrad does the opposite of whatever he is told tell Conrad to not open the box or else he will unleash the mother load of all messes. Of course Conrad being Conrad opens the box and unleashes the mess. When they finally get the box closed the house was wrecked. They had to fix it before their mom got home. So Sally, Conrad, Cat, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 worked together to clean up the house and they did it! Some of the literary devices he uses are alliteration. For example who’s in Whoville of Horton hears a who. Another literary device is his symbols like the Cat in the hat. In the story the hat symbolizes magic and fun. Also, the box in the story symbolizes cause and effect, consequences when rules are broken, and lastly unprecedented fun. Lastly, he uses rhyme scheme to add a rhythmic feel to his poem and also his own personal style. Even though Dr. Seuss makes it hard not to love his up beat wacky stories that while they provide you a giggle hear and there and skip to your step all while teaching you life lessons many people still criticize Dr. Seuss. Many because Dr. Seuss’s stories address political and social issues. â€Å"In an insightful 1995 analysis in the journal Children’s Literature, Tim Wolf of Middle Tennessee State University points out a recurring theme in his books: the desperate need â€Å"to win the approval of a rejecting parent. † On the first page of Dr. Seuss’ first children’s book, 1937? And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, a father sternly tells his son: â€Å"Stop telling such outlandish tales. Stop turning minnows into whales. † Also, Timothy Cook wrote in the Political Research Quarterly in 1983 like L. Frank Baum, â€Å" â€Å"present a distinctly negative aspect of government and authority. † In such tales as Yertle the Turtle and The 500 H ats of Bartholomew Cubbins, â€Å"Seuss shows political authority as potentially selfish and exploitative, thirsting for more power, heedless of the best interests of the community,† Cook asserts. Both Baum and Seuss, by the conclusions of their stories, appear to argue that government should be limited in its scope. † †. As you can see even though Dr. Seuss’s Stories are meant to make us giggle they also serve a larger purpose and that is to address social and political issues in the world that he sees. All in all Dr. Seuss plays a prominent role in American literature because he sets the basic building blocks for children at a young age. No matter what age you are you can’t help but let your inner child out when you read these silly tales.

Purpose of Writing a Narrative Essay Using a Superhero Theme

Purpose of Writing a Narrative Essay Using a Superhero ThemeIf you're like me, you may have an intense desire to write a narrative essay using a superhero theme, but it's tough to think of a real 'superhero' for your topic. The good news is, if you can think of a great super-hero for your topic, you can certainly make use of a story or even comic-book superhero as a narrative essay topic.Think about the one person you've ever seen - either on the big screen or in your local library - who's so huge and powerful, it seems like Superman has suddenly appeared out of nowhere. You see him and he radiates an air of power and confidence - but you're afraid to meet him face to face, for fear of being overwhelmed by his size and power. You simply know he is powerful.Does that sound familiar? Think about Superman in The Man of Steel. This article will explore the reason I call this style of essay a Super Hero essay. In my experience, high schoolers love superheroes because they represent strengt h and power, they are big and powerful, and they almost always save the day. As a result, many of these high school students have developed powerful hero complexes. In fact, this is true with many other college students who tend to embrace the same type of narratives when writing.Another reason a student may develop a super hero complex is the fact that the typical story we tell ourselves is that we want to be strong and smart - rather than 'smart'strong.' We try to be smart, do well in school, and do well in life. Why?Because we've been told by our parents, teachers, coaches, and peers that 'strong'smart' are the things we should be. We believe what we see in the media, and in our own internal dialogue. Those images help us 'see' ourselves. The reason it is so important for us to make our own story is that we often feel we don't have a choice about how we act and that what we believe in is so weak and easy to change. As a result, these college students often feel stuck, in constant need of a new storyline to which they can be drawn. When they read a Batman comic or watch a Superman movie, they feel inspired and excited to act the part.A Super Hero essay is a great way to do this. Once you have an 'idea,' you can easily turn it into a story - often using a powerful super-hero in a smaller role. The classic story of Batman saving the world, or Superman saving the world from disasters is also great for your narrative essay.

The Suffix -esque and the Like

The Suffix -esque and the Like The Suffix â€Å"-esque† and the Like The Suffix â€Å"-esque† and the Like By Mark Nichol The suffix -esque, one of a class of what are called adjectival suffixes, is adopted from the French version of the Italian suffix -esco, related to the standard English adjectival suffix -ish, and all of them mean like, or â€Å"related to† or â€Å"characteristic of†; -esque is more specialized, while -ish has additional senses. The French form is attached to common nouns, as in, for example, the words grotesque and statuesque, as well as to proper nouns such as Kafkaesque, denoting a style similar to an artistic oeuvre, or Chaplinesque, referring to one resembling that of a person or a persona. Note that the suffix is almost invariably closed, without a hyphen; the only exception I can think of is when the last letter of the root word is an e, as in Klee-esque. But the more important issue is to avoid impulsive creation of new appellations. Well-worn examples have earned their place by repetition based on widespread and lasting influence; a neologism like Snookiesque, for example, should be employed only with tongue in cheek. (And if you don’t recognize the basis of this coinage, such good fortune on your part demonstrates my point.) The simple appendage -like closed unless the preceding letter is a vowel or the root word is a proper noun will do. The Germanic equivalent -ish is used more prolifically and promiscuously; it can also indicate origin or classification (English), an inclination or disposition (bookish, impish), a degree or trace of some quality (blueish, darkish), or an approximation (fiftyish). Sometimes, it’s part of a standing term; for example, selfish, though it is a compound of self and ish, doesn’t carry an immediate association with the root word self. Like -esque, -ish is seldom attached to a root word with a hyphen. The adjectival suffix -ese also serves both common and proper nouns (academese, Japanese); the former usage invariably refers to a type of jargon and is usually pejorative, with a connotation of obtuseness or pretension, whereas the latter usage is neutral unless placed in a derogatory context. The form -ian signals disposition (contrarian), occupation (librarian), adherence to a philosophy (libertarian), or language or regional or national origin (Russian); the variation -an is common (vegan, publican, republican, Tuscan). Meanwhile, -ic indicates a characteristic (basic) or a linguistic, cultural, or other sociological category (Gothic). Two other forms, -hood (adulthood), and -ness (happiness), may be attached to proper nouns as well as common ones (Buddhahood, Englishness), but such exceptions are rare and in the case of capitalized terms ending in -ness are restricted to references to cultural identity. (One exception: Jocular references to someone embodying the essence of another person, as with Hasselfhoffness.) Many other adjectival suffixes, mostly meaning â€Å"state of,† exist, but they are seldom if ever associated with proper nouns. These forms include the following: -ability (reliability) -ia (nostalgia) -ibility (invisibility) -icity (electricity) -itas (gravitas) -itude (gratitude) -ity (gravity) -ose (morose) -osity (porosity) -ous (generous) -ship (hardship) -th (death) Which suffix to apply depends partly on the construction of the root word and partly on tradition. Prerogative Powers in The Context of The UK Constitution Essay

Prerogative Powers in The Context of The UK Constitution - Essay Example The British constitution (comprising of a set of guiding principles and laws) is derived from a large number of sources that include: Royal prerogative powers Conventions Statute EU Treaties Common law Authoritative statements made in print, as in law books. Royal prerogative laws existed prior to the current form of the UK parliament. Officially, the right to exercise prerogative laws are retained by the Queen. However, in actual practice Ministers of the Crown, which comprise of the British Cabinet, exercise majority of these laws. The powers, as vested by the royal prerogative laws, are termed as Royal prerogative powers. On the other hand, statutes are laws that are passed by the UK Parliament; hence, they refer to laws  that are considered as the highest form of law for all governmental activities. This essay briefly examines differences that exist between Royal prerogative powers and statutory powers, while analysing and deriving that prerogative powers in their current form are not compatible as regards executive accountability, and needs modification to ensure better governance. Discussion Prerogative powers and statutory powers: The  royal prerogative  is a set of established privileges, immunities and authority, acknowledged in the  UK  as the sole right of the Sovereign. A majority of the  executive  powers, vested in the queen and exercised by the UK cabinet, have been accorded under the royal prerogative laws. Historically during middle ages in the UK, the king used royal prerogative powers to enforce his will during the process of decision-making, which purportedly aimed at public good. However, from 19th century, various reforms took place and by convention, it became compulsory to take into account the  advice given by Ministers of the Crown or the Prime Minister, who in turn are accountable to the UK Parliament for their decision while exercising prerogative powers.2 Under the constitution, the queen retains his or her powers to exercise Royal Prerogative laws against the advice of the UK Cabinet or the Prime Minister, however in actual practice the queen can only act as such during emergencies or where there are no precedent cases that can be applied suitably to that specific situation. Currently, the royal prerogative laws encompass various areas that are significant and critical to the United Kingdom, including country’s security, defence, and foreign affairs. While the queen’s name is officially present in all the aforementioned areas, in reality she exercises very little power, because currently royal prerogative power is vested mainly in the hands of the Cabinet ministers and the prime minister. While delineating prerogative powers, there have been difficulties in giving it a clear definition. As the Select Committee on Public Administration  Fourth Report  framed it in their review, â€Å"The royal prerogative itself is a notoriously difficult concept to define adequately.
